What Could Cause Your Car’s Engine to Sputter?

Engine sputtering can be a big problem for your car’s engine, especially if it leads later to bigger issues like engine stalling. At the very least, it’s frustrating and irritating to hear coming from the engine. As it becomes worse, you can actually experience engine damage. Here’s what Brown Automotive Repair wants you to know.

Fuel System Clogs

Any time there are clogs anywhere in the fuel system, that means that the right amount of fuel isn’t getting where it needs to be. The stuff clogging up your fuel lines, fuel filter, or fuel injectors can also break loose and make its way deeper into the fuel system or, worse still, the engine. That can lead to misfiring, sputtering, and even engine damage. None of that is great news for the long-term health of your car’s engine.

Fuel Pump Issues

If there are issues with the fuel pump, it won’t be able to get the right amount of fuel moved from the gas tank through the system to the engine. That can lead to engine sputtering because inconsistent amounts of fuel are getting to the combustion chambers. When the problems with the fuel pump are intermittent, it can be difficult to notice that the engine sputtering is related to anything happening with the fuel pump.

Sensor Failure

Your car’s onboard computer relies on information to help it make changes as necessary to keep the engine running smoothly. If the sensors that provide that information fail or start to have difficulty collecting data, the engine control module is flying blind. It either won’t make any changes at all or it might start to make random changes, especially if the information that is getting through is random as well.

Spark Problems

Without spark, the fuel and air mixture in your car’s engine doesn’t combust properly. Spark plugs that are going bad or that have dodgy wiring connections aren’t going to offer the spark necessary. That spark might also be timed improperly, even if it is powerful enough to do the job. Again, this can lead to misfiring and sputtering. All of which mean bad news for your car’s engine.
