How Can You Tell That You Need New Tires?

It’s not always easy to know when your car needs something replaced, like your tires, for example. Brown Automotive knows that car owners don’t always feel comfortable knowing exactly when they need new tires. And going by a blowout or some other tire incident is definitely not the way to go. We can help.

Checking the Tread Regularly Helps

When you look at your tires regularly, you can more readily spot changes in treadwear and depth. If you want a visual, the penny test is always a good way to gauge tire depth. Hold the penny upside down and place it against the tire, in the tread. If you can see the top of Abraham’s head, your tread is worn down too far.

Your Tires Have Cracks or Bulges in the Sidewall

Along with tread, another way to get information from the visual inspection of your tires is to look carefully at the sidewalls. You’re looking for signs that the sidewall is getting dried out or brittle. You’re also looking for things like bulges or cracks that can indicate that the tire is not in good shape. If something doesn’t look right about the tires, it’s better to have them inspected rather than drive around on them as they are.

Your Car Vibrates When You Drive It

As you’re driving, pay attention to how the car feels. If you start to feel vibrations that increase as you increase your speed, that’s a sign that there’s something wrong with your tires. The problem could be a balance issue, but if you know that they are on the older side, it’s likely that you need new ones.

Your Tires Are Past the Mileage or Age Recommended by the Tire Manufacturer

When you do buy new tires, many are listed as having a recommendation that includes information about tire mileage and expected age. These are recommendations based on tire testing from the manufacturer. If you know that you haven’t replaced them in quite a while, then they’re likely outside of the recommendation from the manufacturer.

If you’re not sure whether or not you need new tires or you simply want yours inspected, Brown Automotive in Trussville, AL can help. We’ll be happy to inspect them and let you know what we recommend for your car. Afterward, we’ll also be happy to support your tire maintenance, so that your new tires last as long as possible.
