Four Reasons Your Car Might Be Overheating

An overheating car is not good news. Heat is your car’s worst enemy, which is why the manufacturer puts so many different systems in place to help keep the car’s engine as cool as possible. If you’re dealing with overheating issues, Brown Auto Repair wants you to have some ideas why that might be.

You’re Losing Coolant

Coolant levels don’t stay static, even though you may want them to. That’s because heat does break coolant down and it does evaporate. There may also be a leak somewhere in the cooling system. Because of all of those reasons, it’s important for you to periodically check your coolant levels and make sure that there’s plenty in your car.

Cooling System Issues

Beyond coolant, there can be other issues in your cooling system. There could be a leak anywhere, but individual components can fail, too. If something happens with your water pump or radiator, that’s a huge blow to your cooling system. The car’s engine will overheat quickly because there’s no way for the cooling system to keep up.

Your Car Needs an Oil Change

It doesn’t seem like it, but your car’s oil changes are about more than just sending oil through the engine. It all comes down to what oil does in the engine. Engine oil hangs onto dirt and debris until it circulates back through the oil filter, and it also lubricates engine parts. But the third big job engine oil has is to serve as a backup for the cooling system and help to keep the engine a little bit cooler. If you’re not changing the oil frequently enough, that can show up as overheating issues.

Head Gasket Failure

You’re not going to run into this next problem every day. Hopefully, you’ll never have to deal with a busted head gasket. If for some reason your engine’s head gasket does go, though, your car is likely to overheat almost immediately. It’s much more likely that you’ll deal with head gasket issues if your car overheats often and you don’t do the right troubleshooting to get it properly fixed.
