It’s summertime! The kids are out of school, and it’s almost time for your much-needed family vacation. Looking for ideas to keep the kids (and yourself) entertained on that long road trip? Here are four classic games that your whole family can play together.
Twenty Questions
One player thinks of an object and tells the rest of the family which category it belongs in: animal, vegetable, or mineral. Everyone else takes turns asking yes or no questions. If someone correctly guesses the object, they win the round and choose the next object. If everyone has asked a total of twenty questions and no one has guessed the object, the first player gets to choose an object for the next round.
Alphabet Game
This game can be played together as a team, or your family members can compete against each other. Players look out the windows for each letter of the alphabet in order from A–Z. The letters must be on signs outside the vehicle, and you can only use each sign once. If you want to make the game more challenging, create some additional rules such as using only letters that begin words.
Fortunately, Unfortunately
Have fun with this story-telling game in which each player tells only one sentence at a time. The first player starts with a simple sentence such as “Once there was a farmer.” The next player starts their sentence with “unfortunately,” such as “Unfortunately his cow ran away.” The game continues with each player alternating sentences starting with “fortunately” then “unfortunately.” These stories don’t usually have any clear ending, so the game can last as long as you want.
In My Suitcase
The first player starts with “I’m going on vacation, and in my suitcase I packed…,” and then they name an object. The second person repeats what the first player just said, then adds their own object to the end. The game continues until someone can’t remember the growing list of items. Variations to the game include sticking to alphabetical order (apple, banjo, crowbar) or listing only items in a particular category (foods, animals, etc.).
