Five Reasons Your Check Engine Light Isn’t Turning Off

It’s scary enough to see a check engine light, but it’s downright frustrating if you think you’ve resolved the situation and the light won’t turn off. Brown Automotive Repair can help you to figure out what’s going on with your car’s check engine light.

Spark Trouble

Spark is how your car’s engine continues to fire. Damaged spark plug wires, weak spark plugs, or failed spark plugs aren’t able to offer up that spark to the engine. If the timing for the spark is off at all, that’s also going to cause misfires. And your car’s check engine light is likely to come on and stay on until the problem gets resolved.

Fuel System Issues

Your car has to have fuel, of course, or it’s not going anywhere. If any part of the fuel system stops functioning the way it’s supposed to, that’s going to cause the ECM to light up the check engine light. Problems with the fuel injectors don’t just deprive the engine of all of the fuel it’s supposed to have, but they can also let debris or sediment into the engine, creating misfires.

Exhaust Problems

The exhaust system clears the way for combustion to keep happening. It clears away the fumes and ensures that the combustion chamber is ready to go another round. If there are issues anywhere in the exhaust system, that can cause engine sensors to detect excess exhaust fumes or other issues and switch on the check engine light. Only resolving the issue is going to turn the light off.

Transmission Failure

You might not realize this, but your car’s transmission and engine work closely together in order to get the car running and to keep it running. If there are problems in the transmission or with the transmission fluid, that’s going to eventually have a big impact on the engine. The ECM detects issues in the transmission and lets you know that something is wrong by lighting up the check engine light.

Problems with the ECM or Sensors

Many of these scenarios are detected by sensors in and around the engine. If those sensors fail or there is something malfunctioning in the car’s onboard computer, that can trigger the check engine light to come on, too. Finding out what piece is faulty corrects the problem.
