When the catalytic converter gets completely clogged, it is time to replace it. This usually happens after about 10 years. The converter is in charge of treating your exhaust so it can be released into the environment safely. When the converter treats dangerous carbons, they leave deposits on the honeycomb surface inside the converter. This is what clogs it.
An Illuminated CEL Light
If your automobile’s check engine light has turned on and will turn off, it is possible that the converter is malfunctioning. Unfortunately, unless you are having any of the additional signs below, we will need to run a diagnostic test on your automobile to determine the reason why the check engine light is on. This light works as a catch-all for many engine problems.
Sluggish Engine Performance
You may also start to have sluggish engine performance, however, and this is a sign that the converter is clogged. You will notice that the engine is particularly sluggish when you press down on the accelerator. This can be an indication that exhaust cannot make its way through the converter.
Rotten Fuel Economy
When this happens, the exhaust backs up into the combustion chamber and this is what affects your engine’s performance. Unfortunately, the problems don’t stop there. You will also notice a significant reduction in your fuel economy because the main computer chip will add fuel to the chamber in an effort to resolve the sluggish engine performance.
Black Exhaust Smoke
This excess fuel can create black exhaust smoke. If you see black exhaust smoke in your rearview mirror, the engine is either burning excess fuel or the converter is not treating the exhaust before it is released through the exhaust system.
Burning Sulfur Odors
One easy way to tell if your problems are being caused by the catalytic converter is to pay attention to how your exhaust smells. If the converter is clogged by sulfur deposits, the exhaust will smell like rotten eggs. It may also smell like rotten eggs underneath your vehicle.
A Ton of Excess Heat
Speaking of underneath your vehicle, there will be a ton of excess heat that is being released by the converter if it is faulty. You may notice that your engine has been running hotter than normal. In severe cases, it may overheat.
